Iceberg 2

It all started as a joke.

Sort of.

A friend of mine was completely unhappy.  He didn’t like where he was living. He said he wanted to change, but he didn’t know how.

He posted this on Facebook.  Simple.  Direct.

I’m unhappy and I don’t know how to change.

Without giving it much thought, I replied:

Change is easy.  

  • Step 1: Accept where you are.
  • Step 2: Decide where you want to go.  
  • Step 3: Go there.

I laughed.

But the next day I began to think.

I’ve changed a lot of things in my life.  Where I live.  My body.  My diet.  Quit bad habits.  Started healthy ones.

And most of these changes weren’t easy at all.

Why?

Why can’t we just decide that we want to do something — and then do it?

I have watched friend after friend commit to a new goal, or lifestyle — become so passionate about it — and then…simply…

Slide…all the way back.

It baffles me.

Without a doubt, I think there was some wisdom to my flippant Facebook response.  And that is going to be my focus with this blog.

Making change easy.

And the first step to making those changes is to accept where you are right now — because you need to know where you are starting from to know where you are going.  So when you have a couple minutes, answer these questions.

Okay — if you have never done this before — let me just tell you how liberating it is.  Liberating because, if you’re anything like me, you have a tendency to worst case scenario EVERYTHING.

And then hide.

By bringing things out in the open like this, you have a chance to really, truly accept them.  And, for me, the things I’m hiding from are never as bad as they are in my mind.

So now you know my starting point.  And it’s important that you know your starting point.  Right?  Because, in order to get to where you’re going, you need to know where your journey begins.

So how do you feel about my starting point?  I feel fine about it.  For the most part.  Obviously I don’t feel great about it — or I wouldn’t want to change it.  Right?
